The video was produced as a part of the series “When Tiger Used to Smoke”. Communication among mammals is indirect and always relies on a pre-learned and common signifier. Most animals rely on sound, bodily gestures and motion to communicate with each other. Development of language and technology flourished human civilization, but may have subdued our innate senses and animal instincts. Video image of a lioness is dissected into vertical pieces and misaligned in order to accentuate her “motion”. Can a particular “motion” trigger our innate sense of communication?

<사자의 시간>은 <호랑이 담배 피던 시절> 시리즈의 일부로 제작되었다. 포유류의 의사 소통은 미리 학습된 공통된 기표에 의존하여 간접적으로 작용하게 된다. 대부분 동물들은 언어와 달리 소리, 몸짓 및 동작에 의존하여 서로 소통한다. 언어와 기술의 발달은 인간의 문명을 번성시켰지만 우리의 타고난 감각과 동물의 본능을 억누르는 작용을 할 수 있다. 조각나고 엇나가는 비디오 이미지는 사자의 본능적 “움직임"을 강조한다. 그 “움직임"은 디지털 네트워크시대에 살고 있는 우리에게 잊혀진 소통의 감각의 단서를 제시한다.
