“ A Perspective of a Volume", 2025

The sculpture takes the form of Gwangju’s Geumnam-ro as if cast in relief—a site where countless lives were lost, and where collective memory is rekindled each year through the gatherings and marches that honor the Gwangju Democratization Movement. The exterior surfaces of buildings and streets are inverted into the interiors of buildings and the depths beneath the street, visualizing spaces that are ordinarily unseen. We remember space through the body. A particular distance, height, or depth becomes a physical cue that anchors memory. Thus, the memories left in a place can be retrieved when we return to it. In this way, space, proportion, and volume—linked to the body’s perception through vision—become integral to our consciousness.

이 조형물은 광주시 금남로를 음각으로 떠내어 굳힌 듯한 형상을 가지고 있다. 수많은 이들이 희생된 그곳은, 매년 이어지는 행진을 통해 5·18 민주화운동의 기억이 다시 불러일으켜지는 장소이기도 하다. 건물과 거리의 바깥이자 부피의 표면은 건물 내부, 거리의 하부로 표현되어, 보이지 않는 공간을 시각화한다. 우리는 공간을 몸으로 기억한다. 특정 거리, 높이, 깊이는 기억을 만드는 신체적 단서가 된다. 그래서 어떤 장소에 남겨 놓은 기억은, 다시 그곳에 되돌아왔을 때 되찾을 수 있다. 이처럼 공간, 비례와 부피는 시각을 통한 몸의 감각과 연계되어 우리 의식의 일부를 구성한다.
